Today you will have the opportunity to experience the city on your pace with the sightseeing Hop on-Hop off tour. Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is a Mediterranean and cosmopolitan city with Roman remains, medieval quarters and beautiful examples of 20th century Modernism and avant-garde. It is no surprise that emblematic constructions by the Catalan architects Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Doménech i Montaner have been declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. The city’s original site, which was surrounded by walls in the Roman period, is today the Barrio Gótico (Gothic Quarter). Along narrow streets, with small squares and charming corners, you will find civil and religious Gothic constructions, and medieval palaces standing around the impressive cathedral. The Plaça del Rei is a square with an array of spectacular buildings and at the Plaça de Sant Jaume you can find important institutions, such as the Regional Parliament and the City Hall. On the other hand, one of the best places to catch the rhythm of the city is called Las Ramblas, one of the main arteries of the historic quarter. Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 9: Full Day Montessarat + Barcelona Highlights

Today take a air conditioned coach journey out of Barcelona and climb the majestic mountains of Montserrat to a height of over 1,200m. Shaped over the centuries by erosion from wind and rain, the rocks up here have taken remarkable forms and inspired myths and legends for centuries. Visit the stunning Abbey of Santa Maria of Montserrat, built in the 11th century and home to a highly important shrine of the Virgin of Montserrat, also known as “The Black Virgin”. Then head back into the city to take in the best works of one of Catalonia’s favourite sons, Antoni Gaudí. Visit the spectacular and famously unfinished Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, the spectacular, modernist Parc Güell and Paseo de Gracia, which features the famous Casa Batllò and la Pedrera. Learn the history and admire the beauty of these structures as your guide leads you through the centre of Barcelona.
