About

The Altar of the Fatherland in Rome (Altare della Patria in italian), best known as national monument " Vittoriano" and located in Venice Square, was built in 1885 by the architect Giuseppe Sacconi to commemorate italian unification. The monumental complex of Vittoriano overlooking the Roman Forum area was dedicated to king Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoia and was inaugurated in 1911. Many buildings were demolished such as the Tower of Paul III, the bridge connecting the Palazzo Venezia with three cloisters of the convent of Ara Coeli and all minor building on the slopes of this hill, in order to make room for the complex. The main element of the Vittoriano neo-classical portico is characterized by the Corinthian columns that correspond to the two columns. This architecture is reminiscent of the Temple of Nike located on the Acropolis of Athens.
