About

Ashoka Pillar, located outside the Allahabad fort was constructed in the 16th century. The pillar has the inscriptions from Ashoka and later inscriptions to Samudragupta and Jahangir were also attributed to this pillar. Constructed by Akbar at the confluence of the rivers Ganges and Yamuna, this pillar is one the most important attractions of the city. At present, the fort is occupied by the Indian Army and therefore special permission is required to see the pillar. It is also said that the pillar was first erected at Kaushambi, which is an ancient town located at a distance of around 30 km to the west of Allahabad. Kaushambi was initially the capital of the Kosala kingdom.
