El Ingenio was Salvador Dalí's favorite store and after a quick peek inside, that sounds about right. As you enter the antique storefront, prepare to be transported to a circus of color and magic - provided you have no fear of clowns. Since 1830 when the Escaler family opened this small workshop dedicated to papier-mâché sculpting, El Ingenio has been a classic for costumes, puppets, carnival masks and gadgets for all ages. The gigantic papier-mâché heads of politicians, historic figures and Hollywood babes are the stars of local fiestas and parades. And should you take a particular disliking to a particular People regular, you can always turn one into a piñata.
