About

The Markha Valley is named after a tributary of the Zanskar that flows somewhere between the Stok and Zanskar mountain ranges. Although very remote, it is perhaps the most popular trekking trail in Ladakh, despite the serious challenges that it offers. The trek is, therefore, not meant for those who are looking to have a sweet time in the hills, with all the luxuries of urban existence a few hours away. This trek is a serious pursuit of the stark beauty of Ladakh and the views compensate for all the hardships that one bears while camping along this high altitude cold desert.
The trail passes through the marvellous Hemis National Park and those with a keen eye are likely to spot the blue sheep and the ibex. Crossing streams and rivers plus hiking for long hours in this cold desert is an experience that few can deny a special place in their memories. As you cross the Kanda La (4870 m), climb through gorges and cut across barley and mustard fields, the mystical charm of remote Ladakhi villages on the route tempts you to take a break from the insane drama that we call city life. Hiking further over high altitude pastures, reminding one of oases in a desert, you reach the highest point of the trek (5200 m), from where incredible views of the Karakoram and the Himalayas leave you spellbound. A few days later the trek ends at the wonderful Hemis monastery, with its warm austerity welcoming you back to a gentler and familiar world.
