About

Founded in 1894 by the Dutch government, this museum was originally a research facility to find cures for insect-borne plant diseases. Now a zoological laboratory as well as a public museum of natural history, it exhibits 400,000 specimens of more than 15,000 species of Indonesian land and sea creatures. The display includes skeletons of animals such as the giant crab and blue whale, as well as a stuffed rhinoceros and Komodo dragon. The museum also houses dioramas of animals, a library, laboratory and research facilities.
