About

Sam Tung Uk, meaning three beam dwelling, is a restored 200 year old rural village. This square-walled Hakka village was built by the Chan clan. Declared a historical monument in 1981, the site underwent extensive repairs and restoration and opened as a museum in 1987. An ancestral hall, two rows of side houses, an exhibition hall and four period houses filled with period furniture, handicrafts and obsolete tools such as a winnowing machine which was used to separate grain. The A hands-on exhibition entitled "The Way We Were" has been specially designed for visitors to experience village life. The musuem contains a wealth of historical information and other implements which were used in the production of rice, the village's main industry. Rooms are set up as they would have been used, with original furniture and decoration and clothing worn by the villages is displayed with authentic Hakka hats, which you are invited to try on and taken photos with.
