About

This traditional Berlin symphony orchestra was founded in 1967 as the Symphonische Orchester Berlin and changed to its current name in 1990. It resulted from a merger of the Berliner Symphonische Orchester and the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester. The first conductor was Carl August Bünte, who later became a professor at the Hochschüle der Künste Berlin (university of the arts). The orchestra is now under lead conductor Lior Shambadal. It normally performs in Berlin in the Philharmonie and in the Haus des Rundfunks, but also has open-air performances such as the Klassik Open Air in the Kulturbrauerei and the Pyromusikale on the site of Tempelhof airport. It offers a wide repertoire and frequently records CDs and television performances. World-famous choirs, directors and soloists such as Luciano Pavarotti have joined them for gala concerts and special events. International recognition of the artistic quality of the orchestra is proven by the warm reception in countries as varied as Brazil, the USA and Egypt, as well as recurrent invitations to England, Italy, Switzerland and Spain.
