Huli Shan Fort

Siming Nan Road

About

Considering this fort's tropical beach setting with Xiamen University behind it, it is difficult to fathom that this site was once better known for cannons and carnage rather than books and bikinis. Built in 1896 out of sand, clay, and glutinous rice locals like to joke that besides protection the fort also served as a tasty snack. A massive German-made 60 ton gun is the fort's main attraction and rates as China's best preserved coastal cannon. The fort also boasts an impressive display of ancient armaments.
