As a former English teacher, I am proud to say that Paul Dubrule School (www.ecolepauldubrule.org) does some very good things for young Cambodians. Imagine if you have been born in a rubbish dump outside of Phnom Penh, what chances are there that you would, when you are twenty, be able to distinguish sparkling water from still, as a five-star client would demand in a five-star establishment The school reaches out to poor Cambodians and there are scholarships that are awarded to help these poor Cambodians have a chance to support themselves through working in the thriving hotel industry in Siem Reap. What amazes me is the standards set for these Cambodians. Of course, there were some students who did not appreciate their chances - but having met some of my students from 2006, I confirm that many of them have done very well. The internship that students serve in local companies, helps them stay relevant. As a tourist, you MUST eat at Le Jardin des Delices - yes, it sounds terribly French and you might worry about the different sets of cutlery all arranged in front of you but the restaurant is practice for the students - so you will be amused by how nervous your young waiters and waitresses are. Speaking slowly and simply will help them - they are VERY eager to please! Food is prepared by chefs in training - have lunch there at least ONCE during your stay. Oh - and there are two rooms as well. However, because the school is a little far from town, I would not recommend it, though the rooms are lovely and very good value.
