AB Just Nuisance RN

Court Road, Simon's Town

About

An exceptionally intelligent and warm dog, Just Nuisance, was in 1939 enlisted into the British Navy, (which then owned the Simon's Town enclave). This tall Great Dane, now known as Able Seaman, was a regular traveller on the train between Simon's Town and Cape Town, and would often escort inebriated sailors back to their ship. Apparently the Great Dane was not averse to the odd pint himself. Every April 1 (both the anniversary of Just Nuisance's birth and death) is marked by a street parade in Simon's Town to commemorate this extraordinary animal. In Jubilee Square a bronze statue of the famous canine pays tribute to him. To reach the actual burial site, follow the twisty Redhill Road (M66) and turn left into Navy Grounds, following the sign for 'Just Nuisance Grave'. Further information and memorabilia on Just Nuisance is available at the Simon's Town museum.
