About

Founded in 1926 A.C. Fiorentina (otherwise known as the "Viola") are passionately, if at other times somewhat over enthusiastically, followed by their loyal band of supporters. They entertain their fans at the Artemio Franchi stadium which has a ground capacity of circa 47,495. Although they have won the Italian championship only twice in their entire history, the club maintains a proud and historic place within Italian football. In recent times Fiorentina have experienced many highs and lows. After having been relegated for the first time since 1938 in the 1992/93 season, Fiorentina returned to the top flight of Italian football the following season as Serie B champions. Since then Fiorentina have slowly re-established themselves once again as a force in Serie A. In 1996 they won the Coppa Italia for the fifth time in their history, their first major trophy since they last won the cup in 1975. They also added the Italian Supercup in 1996 after having beaten the mighty A.C. Milan 2-1 at the San Siro. The club is renowned for their famous purple kit that they wear as well as for the attractive style of football they play. Their popularity worldwide was further enhanced by their president Vittorio Cecchi Gori, the charismatic film distributing magnate.
