Akbaba is a 'meyhane' restaurant in Beyoglu. A meyhane is a Turkish party where there is a lot of rake-drinking (rake is their aniseed liquor) and folk singing. Akbaba is one of a cluster of meyhane restuarants in this area off of Istiklal but it's one of the better ones that don't need touts to beckon you in. The waiter brings around a tray full of mezes to choose from - the variety is amazing - ranging from eggplant in tomatoes to hummus to seafood to spicy paste, it goes on and on. There is also seafood and kebabs and rake to wash everything down. Also, it's fun to watch the Turks party. They get into it.
