Chatzis

Mitropoleos 5 Cuisines: European

About

Chatzis (prounounced Had-ZEES) started in Thessaloniki in the early part of the 20th century. Since then it's become a name synonymous with "sweet." The Syntagma store opened in 2008 and is an elegant place for sampling Oriental sweets. Try Kunefe, a delicious Mediterranean/ Middle Eastern specialty made with  shredded filo dough and nuts, fried and then steeped in syrup. Chatzis offers the traditional version or one made with a layer of fresh buffalo cheese. It takes twenty minutes to make and is sized to share, perhaps validating the nearly nine euro price tag. Baklava, Turkish delights, ice cream and various other sweets and breads are all available to take away. The price is lower than sitting in but then again, it takes away some of the pleasure of indulgence. Nearest metro: Syntagma
