About

Nearly 800 years old, the abbey is home to Poland's most famous sanctuary of the crucified Christ. The Metropolitan Bishop of Kraków Karol Wojtyła frequently prayed here. Proof of his bond to the Mogiła Sanctuary was its choice - from among many other proposed sites - as the scene for one of his meetings with the faithful during the first pilgrimage to his homeland in 1979. In 2008, a monument to John Paul II by Marek Kordyaczny was erected in the courtyard of the sanctuary.
