This massive stone fortress, begun by Salah ad-Din in 1176 was home to Egypt's rulers for 700 years.  Egypt's diverse heritage can be seen in the fortifications, palaces, mosques, and museums.  The Turkish style Mohammed Ali Mosque crowns the Citadel and was built between 1830 and 1848.  Open daily.
