About

The old market town of Pontypridd was the birthplace of the Welsh National Anthem and boasts a continuing tradition of amateur music-making. The choir was reformed after the war in 1949, and quickly developed a reputation for quality, winning its first Eisteddfod only 18 months after formation. In June 1973, the choir sang outside the stage door of the New Theatre Cardiff for Marlene Deitrich. Five days later, at Miss Deitrich’s request, the choir performed a fifteen minute slot in her show. The choir has continued to perform with many popular and great artists. The Late Sir Geraint Evans, Stuart Burrows, Ivor Emmanuel, the Late Sir Harry Secombe , Max Boyce, Gillian Humphries, Mike Doyle and Peter Karrie to name but a few. Most recently, the choir appeared on the “One Show” with Myleen Klass on B.B.C Television, in a celebration of the writing of that old Welsh favourite hymn, Cwm Rhondda. During its history, the choir has developed links with several communities around the world. We have sung in Poland, the Republic of Ireland and have also made two tours of Northern Ireland as guests of the Armed Forces and the Local Authority of Limivady. We also visited Cyprus recently as guests of the Armed forces to support for Help for Heroes fund raising. The choir has appeared in the Festival of 1000 Voices at the Royal Albert Hall on seven occasions. We are honoured and delighted to have our Dorothy still as the only Lady ever to conduct this prestigious Festival. In July/August 2009 the choir completed a very successful tour to Nurtingen, Germany. A remarkable tour in that it continues a choir friendship with the German choir Liedenkrantz Oberensingen, which has flourished for over forty years and ,indeed formed the basis of the Pontypridd/Nurtingen twinning scheme which also continues to flourish. We are confident of the friendship continuing as we look forward to hosting our German friends in 2013. In 1999 and 2003 the choir had very successful tours of the Western United States, giving concerts in Denver, Grand Junction, Sacramento, Santa Rosa, Reno, Stockton and Monterey. The choir is supported in its various activities by a host of patrons and vice- presidents from all walks of life. None more noteworthy than our current president David Collins. David has been president for several years and ,along with his equally loyal wife Mary, never misses a concert at home or away. Amazing when you consider they live in Winchester. So, join us if you will! From time to time the choir produces a C.D. and our latest effort, A Voice of Singing is available tonight. Cor Meibion Pontypridd continues to entertain and support local, national and International organisations and charities.
