Tuition is also possible with qualified instructors. The coves and inlets around the enclosed harbour where Derrynane Sea Sports is based are perfect to explore in a canoe or with a snorkel and mask. If the surf is up on the nearby beach then rent a body board or surf board and hit the waves. In July and August, the company also runs a children's morning camp for 7- to 12- year-olds and an afternoon Pirates Camp for 4- to 8-year-olds. These Monday to Thursday camps take place in July and August and finish with a barbeque. Hugely popular with children from the local communities and holidaymakers alike, booking in advance is recommended to avoid disappointment.These camps are run by a team of qualified, fun-loving instructors and provide an excellent opportunity for children to gain confidence in the water while partaking in water sports. The natural coves, nooks and crannies within the harbour provide all the mystery and adventure our pirates need to become real seafaring explorers. School groups are also taken off-season.And when you’re finished having fun on the water, there is lots to keep the whole family entertained in the area surrounding Derrynane. Nearby Derrynane House is well worth a visit. It was the home 19th Century Irish political leader Daniel O’Connell who He campaigned for Catholic Emancipation in the 19th Century. It is now a National Monument and sits in a lovely park.Staigue Fort, one of Ireland's finest examples of an ancient ringfort, is also a great place to check out. It’s approximately three miles from Derrynane.Another popular excursion is a boat trip to the Skelligs. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts a mesmerising early Christian monastery as well as thriving gannet and puffin population.A wide range of accommodation is also on offer in the area ranging from cosy bed and breakfasts and guesthouses to family run or high-end hotels.
