About

Running until 5 January 2014, this exhibition at Amsterdam’s Tropenmuseum examines the more obscure influences on Dutch artist M.C. Escher. Even some of his biggest fans may not know that the works of several Islamic painters helped inspire Escher during his much-celebrated career.Escher: finding his museBetween 1922 and 1936, Escher made several trips to Spain’s Alhambra. The craftsmanship and art featured in the famous Islamic palace helped him create some of his most popular works. The exhibition features masterpieces from London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and the Municipal Museum in The Hague.[Image: MC Escher, Air and Water, woodcut, 1938]
