The Falkland Islands consist of two main islands and several hundred smaller islands in the South Atlantic, 300 miles off the east coast of southern South America. Most visitors to the islands come in "summer" between October and March to enjoy the spectacular wildlife and quaint rural lifestyle. The Falklands are a United Kingdom Overseas Territory and are an associated territory of the European Union. The Falklands have been claimed by Argentina as the Islas Malvinas for more than 180 years and were the site of a major conflict between the two countries after Argentina invaded in 1982.
