Flinders Reefs, Townsville, Queensland, Australia

About

Covering an area of approximately 1,000 square kilometres, Flinders Reef is one of the larger reef systems in the Coral Sea. It is made up of a cluster of reefs laying some 220km east of Townville. The topography of Flinder Reefs consists of a combination of pinnacles, shallow coral gardens, a 1000m long wall and towering seamounts that rise from the ocean depths. Flinders Reef offers a number of superb diving sites including Scuba Zoo, where a variety of sharks such as whitetips, silvertips, grey reef sharks and an occasional hammerhead attend shark feeding. Another is Flinders Cay where a protected lagoon allows for some excellent night diving. A multitude of seabirds and turtles also congregate here during nesting season between October and March.
