Long before the commercialism of Polly Esther's invaded Montreal, FunkyTown was drawing an older crowd of nostalgia buffs to its 70s-themed disco. Incongruously located on Peel Street, in the middle of downtown, the club is a whirlwind of mirror balls, lighted dance floors and patrons strutting their stuff. Few surprises await the partygoer in line, behind the bar or on the dance floor. Youngsters steer clear in droves, but FunkyTown has been around for years - a safe, predictable, guilty pleasure.
