Ipanema is better known for its beaches, restaurants and nightlife than for its high art, but the neighborhood's beachside art gallery is well worth a visit. The spacious, well-lit white building lends itself well to exhibitions showcasing works from some of Brazil's best-known contemporary artists. From intriguing installations to more traditional oil on canvas pieces, the gallery houses permanent displays as well as temporary exhibits. Just steps from the sands, the cool, airy space makes an ideal respite from the heat outside, and the interesting exhibits make it worth setting aside an hour or two to browse around. - Lucy Bryson
