Gasthof Riedenburg

Neutorstrasse 31 Cuisines: European, Continental

About

One of the best restaurants in and around Salzburg occupies a substantial-looking white-sided villa in the suburb of Riedenburg, about 3km (2 miles) south of the city's historic core. Elegant and well-respected by virtually everyone in town, it attracts well-groomed and well-heeled members of the local bourgeoisie. Enter a trio of paneled dining rooms, each with an elegantly rustic motif of Land Salzburgundian charm. Menu items are urbane, sophisticated, and delicious -- some of the best in town. Examples include lamb cutlets with couscous and chives; marinated brook trout with sweet-and-sour vegetables and fresh herbs; cream of crabmeat soup with aged port; turbot with lobster mousse, spinach, and fennel; and filet of venison with white pepper sauce, noodles, and artichokes. Dessert might be a white chocolate mousse with mandarin oranges. Let the house pick a glass of whatever the wine steward thinks will be appropriate with each course of your meal -- the results can be surprisingly delectable.
