Gauripur House which is located within a walking distance from Alkananda Resort used to be the summer retreat of the famous Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. He had come to Kalimpong for the first time in 1938 and stayed in Gauripur House for almost fifty two days and wrote some unforgettable poems such as "Janmadin", "Jarathikali", "Jaksha" and "Maya". He again visited and stayed in Gauripur House during 1940 and wrote several poems viz, "Namkaran", "Jalil Sansar", "Apaghat" etc.
He had inaugurated the first ever telephone line connecting Kalimpong and Kolkata and during the inauguration he had recited his famous poem "Janmadin" from Gauripur House. Even today one can see the Camphor tree planted by Tagore in front of Gauripur House.
