Großglockner High Alpine Road

Rainerstrasse 2

About

As far as mountain roads go, this is no doubt one of the most impressive in Europe. The 48km-long panoramic route begins in Salzburg and leads to Heiligenblut in Kärnten and involves ascents of up to 2,500m. The road is open from May to November and can be completed in a one day, round-trip from Salzburg. There are several places where drivers can stop for refreshments en route, as well as information points which explain about the flora, fauna and geology of the area. It is also worth making a minor detour to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe (just before Heiligenblut) to admire the splendid view of Austria's highest mountain - Großglockner (3,798m)- and its glacier.
