No retailer has an older or more celebrated name than that of the Hudson's Bay Company, a name shortened in recent years to "The Bay," then transformed into "La Baie" by the language laws that decreed French the lingua franca. The company was incorporated in Canada in 1670. Its main store focuses on clothing, but also offers crystal, china, and Inuit carvings, and its Hbc Signature line features variations on the famous Hudson's Bay blankets. The company was bought by an American investor in 2006, an event that understandably caused consternation among some Canadians.
