About

Lamayuru Monastery, also known as Yuru Gompa, is amongst the biggest and oldest Buddhist shrines in Ladakh. This Kagyupa monastery is situated in Kargil, on the national highway that leads to Leh. Perched atop a big rock, this shrine offers a beautiful view of the Indus River that drains the valley. This monastery was established between 10th and 11th century at the spot where a lake was initially present. After a Lama's blessings, the water from this lake ascended the mountains and the monastery was built at the site. It is also believed that Norapa, a great Tibetan spiritual teacher, meditated at this site for many years.
