L'Île aux Cygnes

Pont de Bir-Hakeim

About

When the original Île aux Cygnes, the former Royal Swan Reserve, was joined to the Left Bank, a dike was built downstream, which gradually came to be known as Swan Island too, despite being swan-free. Today the artificial island is home to a replica of Bartholdi's Statue of Liberty (a short 11.5 meters/37 feet when compared to her Staten Island older sister at 46.5 meters/152 feet), a gift from the US-based French community to celebrate the French Revolution Centennial. Located at the island's western tip, she can be reached by either the Grenelle Bridge or the Bir-Hakeim Bridge. -Charlotte Bonin
