Monument to Jozef Pilsudski

Plac Pilsudskiego

About

Jozef Pilsudski (1867-1935) is one of the greatest Polish Patriots and statesmen. Before the First World War, Pilsudski organized an army of nearly 10,000 men (the Polish Legions) to fight for the freedom of Poland. When the First World War broke out he offered his force to the Austrians to fight against the Russians. During the Russo-Polish War of 1920, Pilsudski was made Marshal of Poland and brilliantly defended Warsaw against the invading Bolshevik armies. In 1926 he invaded Warsaw with 1000 men to make the political process move more to his liking, and reigned as head of state until his death. This is one of two statues of Pilsudski in Warsaw (the other stands beside the Belveder Palace), affectionately refered to by Varsovians as "the father of the parking lot," as he appears to be passively looking down upon the cars parked in front of it.
