About

No city is complete without a planetarium. Moscow's planetarium was built in 1929 in something of a revolutionary style. It was the Soviet's very first planetarium. During its official opening, a lecture was given and an artificial sky demonstrated. A special machine to demonstrate astrological events was brought from Germany. In 1947, a new gallery with cosmic measuring equipment was opened. There are also sculptures of some great scientists, both Russian and non-Russian - Galileo, Bruno, Copernicus, and Lomonosov. In the 1960s, the Planetarium was used as an educational centre for the first cosmonauts Gagarin, Leonov, Titov, and others. The observation deck was built in 1990, although the Planetarium is currently closed for long-term renovation.
