About Muggia

Muggia is the last and only flap of Istria still in Italian territory, after the dissolution of the Free Territory of Trieste in 1954. Muggia is an Italian comune in the extreme south-east of Trieste lying on the border with Slovenia . Among the occurrences characterizing the socio-cultural life of this small city is well worth mentioning the Carnival of Muggia. The Carnival absorbs much of the population of Muggia engaging them in the construction of allegoric carts articulated and moving in order to better mock the chosen victim and in the realization of gorgeous costumes. During those seven days the city becomes a true open-air theatre offering a continuous entertainment that previsibly climaxes in the great parade on the last Sunday. Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo This church is the first thing you will notice when you arrive in the main square of Muggia . Even though the cathedral of Santi Giovannini e Paolo is perhaps more beautiful, this enchanting church from the 18th Century, which looks onto the sea has a lot of history and can be seen from all over the town.

Festa dell'Immacolata Concezione This is a small and simple festival that could have come out of a book by Giovannino Guareschi, in which communists and priests might start fighting on the church square. On December 8, Muggia Vecchia celebrates the Immaculate Conception when a few, pretty stalls of flowers, old style games, candy and delicacies are set up around the old and extraordinary church (which contains many traces of the Romanesque past of this area). Museo archeologico This is the museum of Muggia , an enchanting town on the Slovenian border. It has a small but interesting collection of archeological remains, which have been found in the area and date from the late medieval and neolithic periods. The area is rich in history and a visit to the nearby hill, known as Old Muggia affirms this, as there is an extraordinary church here of roman origin.
