Museum Der Moderne Salzburg

Mönchsberg 32

About

The imposing sleek building sitting atop Mönchsberg over Anton-Neumayr-Platz, the modern counterpart of the spawling white Festung opposite it, is the new Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg, opened in 2004. This spacious, light-filled building of Untersberg marble is home to permanent and changing exhibitions of art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Its photography collection is particularly fine. A sculpture terrace off the third level, beyond a wall-sized plate glass window, seems a natural extension of the interior sculpture display. The museum can be accessed by the street-level elevator at the foot of Gstättengasse or from the trails along the top of Mönschsberg. The museum's café, M32, with its wide terrace and bank of windows, offers spectacular views over the river and the Altstadt.
