The Owenea River Fishery is a great salmon river and consists of nine beats on the bottom eight miles of the river with good pools spread throughout the whole river. The beats cater for three, four or five rods depending on the particular beat. The river has a lot of nice fly water with the majority of fish being caught by this method. When in good condition, the river is one of the best in the country for grilse. July sees the biggest run of grilse. There are additional facilities for anglers, including toilets and hospitality at the angling centre as well as access for disabled anglers along a section of beat three. Shrimp and prawn are strictly prohibited and there is a bag limit of three salmon per day. Bookings can be taken on full payment of rod permit. Rods will be assigned on a first come first served basis and will be rotated through beats thereafter if demand is high.
