Palace of Justice

Church Square

About

Located on Church Square, the historic center of Pretoria, the turreted Palace of Justice building is one of the most magnificent buildings in the city. Designed in 1895 by a Dutch Architecht in the Italian Rennaisance style, today the building acts as the headquarters for the Gauteng provincial division of the Supreme court, which hears high-profile criminal cases. Among the most prominent cases to have been heard here was that of Nelson Mandela in 1964, where the future President was sentenced to incarceration.
