Parque Eduardo VII

Praca Marques de Pombal

About

The best way to appreciate this park, named after the British King Edward VII who visited Portugal in 1902, is from the top of the hill, underneath the two pillars constructed during the Salazar regime. The vista leads the eye straight back down Avenida da Liberdade and towards the river; on a clear day it's possible to make out the distant Arrábida peninsula. Otherwise, the formal, late 19th-century layout of the gardens is rather uninspiring although the greenery does present a picnic opportunity and there are plenty of benches on which to rest tired feet. Unfortunately, the park's only redeeming aspect, the Estufa Fria (greenhouse gardens) is currently closed and not scheduled to reopen until 2012. A book festival is held on the promenade during the summer and while an interesting distraction, this tends to be a very Portuguese affair with few if any English-language publications to browse.
