Founded in 1804 by the banker Mayer Amschel Rothschild, this Jewish educational establishment was originally located in the Judengasse in the heart of the Jewish ghetto. When it became apparent that the building was too small, the school was moved to imposing new premises on Hebelstraße. Originally built as a center for under-privileged Jewish children, Philanthropin soon became the focal point of the Jewish reform movement in Germany. Closed down by the Nazis in 1942, the building survived the War undamaged and was later turned into a conservatory and theater. The Philanthropin is now home to the Freies Schauspiel Ensemble.
