Plac Unii Lubelskiej (Union of Lublin Square)

plac Unii Lubelskiej

About

King August Poniatowski commissioned an urban planning scheme for the then-Southern end of Warsaw towards the end of the 18th century, featuring the Square of the Savior and Plac Unii Lubelskiej. Poland was partitioned before the scheme could be fully carried out, but Plac Unii Lubelskiej has survived until the present day. The two gigantic and characteristic tenement buildings that dominate the Eastern side of the Square date from the second half of the 19th century. The square's name is in memory of the great Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, which created the largest state in Europe, established at Lublin in 1569.
