Poisien or Pumpkin Lady

Soi Ratchawithi 6, Boonme Building Cuisines: Asian, Thai

About

Don't ask a Thai or even one of the staff of this restaurant who the Pumpkin Lady is. It is the backpacker circuit's nickname for this fabulously delicious and cheap local restaurant, just a 5-10 minute walk from Victory Monument. In fact, the name Poisien might even draw blanks, especially as it inevitably comes out funny from a foreigner's mouth. But a rose by any other name, right Come here and enjoy many of the classic hits of Thai cuisine including tom yum goong, panang gai, pad krapow moo sap. Try the fried cabbage with minced pork and egg. Tofu items are also served. Much of the menu is as cheap as street food at 30-40 baht per plate. Tom yum goong is 50 per person. The nickname comes from a lovely dessert, a slice of pumpkin filled with custard. However, it is not always served. Depends on the day. These items are made down the road at their own little dessert stand. It gets tricky to find Pumpkin Lady at night. No English on the building or from the staff. Follow Soi 6 about 200 meters (beyond the overpass) and look for it on the left, just past a laundromat, spilling out from an apartment building right on the side of the road. The menu is also in Thai; go prepared with some dish requests. For help identifying the place, see the photos above or the GPS coordinates.
