About

File this under "Been There, Haven't Done That." If you live near Tampa, you've likely visited Lowry Park Zoo. Named the No. 1 family-friendly zoo on several lists, it's no suprise the zoo offers camps, birthday parties and even sleepovers for young animal lovers. But did you know there's a behind-the-scenes tour just for grown-ups The zoo's VIP tour is just for ages 18 and up. Unlike the children's tours, which stick to the public parts of the zoo, this one is like an all-access backstage pass. The price seems steep at first – $100 per person for up to six pepole – but where else can you feed sweet potatoes to a 5,000-pound rhinoceros!Hubby and I recently took the VIP tour with our friends John and Katie. All four of us had been to Lowry Park Zoo before, but we'd never seen it quite like this, courtesy of our guide, Brad Hauch of the zoo's education department. Among the highlights of our VIP tour:After the two-hour tour, Brad dropped us off in the public part of zoo in case we wanted to explore further. By then, our heads were full of trivia, like which animal is the zoo's oldest; the difference between kangaroos, wallaroos and wallabies; and what the zoo does with all that poop! But I won't ruin the surprise. IF YOU GO Read about all of Lowry Park Zoo's adult offerings on its adult programming page.
