About

Despite a powerful media presence, Japanese food still has a difficult relationship with Basel. Sakura was the first Japanese restaurant in the city, and is still number one today. It is easy to tell whether Sakura is open or not, even from a distance, as the steps leading to the restaurant are retractable - almost like a drawbridge. The restaurant space is divided into a Teppenyaki hall, where the cookery is done in front of guests, and a Yakitori part, where sushi and other delicacies are available. The simple, light decoration of Japanese origin makes the restaurant seem spacious and airy. Food and drink are anything but cheap.
