San Franciscans have been golfing for more than 100 years at the Presidio Golf Course . The 18-hole course, situated on the far eastern side of the Presidio, dates all the way back to 1895, making it one of the three oldest courses in continuous operation west of the Mississippi River. Originally, the course was reserved for members of the Sixth Army Division stationed on-site. It remained completely private until 1996, when it opened for public play as part of the Base Realignment and Closure Act. Of course there's still an exclusivity to golfing at Presidio; the private Presidio Golf Club offers golf and social memberships that rival any within the San Francisco Area.
