Santandrea

Piazza Sant'Andrea 4 Cuisines: Seafood, Italian

About

All of the bounty gathered at the Vucciria morning market is prepared with skill at this chic local favorite in the heart of La Kalsa. In fair weather, you can sit out on this old square to the south of Piazza San Domenico, looking at crumbling buildings from the 19th century. The waiter will recite the day's specials with obvious pleasure; go with the mixed antipasti, which always features fresh seafood. The pasta dishes are excellent, notably spaghetti prepared with sea urchins, a local delicacy, or spaghetti with fresh sardines. One of the habitués at an adjoining table once confided to us, "For a Sicilian, a day without fresh sardines is like a life without sex." The homemade desserts, especially the black chocolate mousse, are some of Palermo's most luscious.
