This nouvelle Japanese restaurant in the western part of the French Concession is the epitome of cool, if you like dining in a cold and dystopian industrial bunker. A bamboo-lined concrete walkway and silent automatic sliding doors lead to the main dining pit, which features a long communal table in the center, and an all-chrome open kitchen in the back. The second floor has some of the best perches for people-watching as well as private dining areas sectioned off by blinds. As expected, the crowd is well-heeled, black-clad, and a bit precious. Sushi and sashimi are fresh and popular, but a fun way to go may be to make a meal from a selection of appetizers such as cuttlefish in butter sauce, Peking duck rolls, foie gras on radish, and vermicelli noodles served in an ice bowl. Save room for the green tea tiramisu dessert. Service is efficient and friendly, which lends some much-needed warmth to the place.
