Sima's

24 Ha'arba'a St Cuisines: Arabic

About

Sima's is an old-fashioned kosher Jerusalem institution that's ventured to open a location on Tel Aviv's trendiest restaurant street. The reason Sima's famous, fabulously seasoned "Jerusalem Mixed Grill" (lamb, chicken, livers, hearts, and other secret ingredients) that's won raves from gourmets the world over. There's a good choice of other Middle Eastern dishes, but the star of the show is the mixed-grill sandwich in pita bread (to which I love to add a sliced tomato) for NIS 40 ($10/£5). Decor is sleek, but in the surly tradition of the original Sima's as a market-worker's eatery, if the place is busy, they may announce that you can only order the mixed-grill sandwich as a takeout item -- to be served the mixed grill at a table, you have to order it as a more expensive platter. If you're at a table with others ordering main courses, they'll let you stay. A great source of iron and vitamin B.
