Somtam Solao

43 Siri Mangkalajam Road Cuisines: Asian, Thai

About

In a simple wooden house on Siri Mangkalajam Road, at meal times Somtam Solao is always full of locals. This is because Solao cooks up some really tasty dishes from Isan, the large eastern region of Thailand between Laos and Cambodia. Isanese food (very similar to Lao food) is known for its gritty texture and extra spicy flavor. The som tam (unripe papaya salad) is this restaurant's specialty and many varieties are made here. Be warned, Solao's Som Tam won't be piped down for western tastes, it is the real deal. There are less spicy options, of course. Solao has a limited English menu of Isanese favorites and dishes popular with foreigners. There is pleasant outdoor seating for nice weather. -Scott Johnson
