South Wales Miners Museum

Afan Argoed Country Park, Cynonville, Port Talbot, Neath Port Talbot, SA13 3HG, Wales

About

The Museum is located in the beautiful Afan Valley and only six miles on the A4107 from the M4. The original Museum was open in 1975 and consisted of portacabins erected and supplied by the then West Glamorgan County Council. In November 2008 a permanent building was erected with funding from Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, Welsh Assembly, Heritage Lottery Fund, Coalfields Regeneration and Communities First. The Museum has an eclectic collection and a particular interest in the social history of mining in the Afan Valley. Complimenting this are many large outdoor artefacts and buildings. The Museum is run entirely by volunteers who man the Museum on a daily basis imparting information and tours whenever requested. Group tours and visitors are welcome but advisable to pre book ensuring sufficient members on hand to assist. On a point of interest the volunteers have met on a regular monthly basis since 1972 – 37 years!
