From Saturday, 7 December to Sunday, 29 December, De Nederlandse Opera will be staging Prokofiev’s The Gambler, a four-act opera that premiered in 1929.A new operatic productionEverything in Prokofiev’s The Gambler revolves around getting money without having to work for it – through an inheritance or by winning at roulette (a game that has a significant impact upon this production’s set design). This opera – based on the book by Dostoyevsky of the same name – stands out for its lively dialogues and sharp insight into the human spirit. Prokofiev even came up with an exciting way to produce of the sound of the roulette wheel in the orchestra.Marc Albrecht conducts while American soprano Sara Jakubiak makes her De Nederlandse Opera debut.
