About

The street that used to be known as Żydowska is today called Józefa. It was renamed by the Austrians in honour of their emperor, Joseph II, who used to live at the very beginning of this street in the Wojewodziński Palace (ul. Krakowska 20). It is with his decision that Kazimierz was separated from Krakow. At present, ul. Józefa is renowned for its artistic atmosphere, created by the numerous contemporary and traditional art galleries, antique shops and souvenir stands. The 16th c. High Synagogue is also located on the street (ul. Józefa 38). The temple was constructed between 1556 and 1563, owing its name to the fact that its prayer room is located on the first floor. The former rich decoration of the synagogue was completely destroyed: first demolished during the Swedish "deluge" of the 17th c. and again during WWII. In the post-war years, it was home to art conservation workshops.
