About

Antoni Zieleniewski, the blacksmith, arrived in Kraków from Warsaw early in the 19th century. In 1810, he purchased a townhouse at ul. Różana 31 (today's ul. Św. Tomasza), where he opened a blacksmith's forge. In 1839, his son, Ludwik, opened a production plant nearby at ul. Św. Marka 31 where he launched mass-production of equipment for agriculture, the mining industry, refineries, and breweries, winning foreign medals together with widespread acclaim. His factory was equipped with a steam engine, drilling machine, planing machine, nail-making machine, 7 forges, 14 ironworking benches, a turnery and a carpentry. It was here that Kraków's modern industry was born. After a fire destroyed the plant in 1886, Antoni's grandsons, Leon and Edmund, built a new factory in ul. Krowoderska. A house with courtyard and garden that used to stand by the factory and forge, as well as the telltale enormous smokestack over the smith's hearth, are all that is left of the buildings erected by Ludwik Zieleniewski.
